Performance Review Synology DS1512+

Yes, Synology is indeed one big manufacturer for products network attached storage (NAS), especially for SMEs and enterprise-class. This time we tested one of latest NAS Synology product for SMEs class, Synology DS1512+.

Synology DS1512+ NAS is a class of SMEs that presents a number of different interesting features. NAS is equipped with the latest processors from Intel, the Atom D2700 2.13 GHz with 1 GB of DDR3 memory. Fairly large size could manage five hard drives. So if you fill up all available disk space, you will get a total capacity of up to 15-20 TB.

On the back there are a number of additional ports. There are two ports that support gigabit LAN and six USB ports for additional external storage media. Six USB ports is divided into four USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 remaining. In addition, there are also as many as two eSATA ports.

Synology DS1512+ offers a lot of interesting features. One of them is the setting was very easy and intuitive via the control panel, called DiskStation Manager (DSM). DSM is practically a kind of Linux-based operating system that is used by Synology to control and carry out the functions of the NAS. Its function is similar to the web control panel that is generally present in other NAS. However, the interface is much more attractive and more flexible like operating systems in general.

Synology DS1512+ supports various RAID configurations, ranging from RAID0, RAID1, RAID5, RAID6, RAID10 up. For flexibility, you can also add a NAS Synology DX510 extension up to two units so you can configure up to 15 hard drives at once. DSM architecture that closely resembles the operating system allows you to make adjustments and additions to the required application.

Synology DS1512+ using the ext4 filesystem on the entire RAID configuration. The formatting process is also going pretty fast although it remains depending on the speed and hard drive capacity. We tested the speed on a LAN that all devices supports gigabit. Classified as very fast transfer speed, can reach up to 100 MB/s or even more. Synology DS1512+ can satisfy your need for a NAS solution for SMEs. Assorted its myriad features, plus a variety of additional applications that can help you. Transfer speed itself is quite satisfying and ready to handle a very large hard drive capacity. However, you have to prepare its own hard drive separately.
