What to Look for in Telecom System Upgrades

When it is time to replace a business phone system, the first question is what type of phone system is right for your business.

Depending on the size of the business, there are several options for telecom system upgrades. In the meantime, a business will want to consider practical means of displacing its used telecom equipment

Virtual phone systems

These are business systems that route calls to staff’s personal or company-issued phones. They usually include virtual receptionists, voice mail, call screening, and forwarding, and online faxing.

Good for small businesses and solopreneurs, virtual phone systems give workers access to features many personal phones don’t have. However, the process calls through the business account and rack-up minutes on the user’s phone.

Landlines

Traditional hard-wired phone systems, landlines are carried into the office by the local phone company. Known as public switched telephone networks, landlines need public branch exchange (PBX) hardware onsite to provide multiple lines, handle call transfers, and internal direct dialing.

Hybrid landline phone systems bring phone company lines into the business’s data network which then routes calls and manages telecom services.

Although less competitive than other systems and often require in-house IT staff, landlines are most reliable and familiar to businesses of all sizes.

VoIP and the Cloud

Running on the same lines as an existing internet connection, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telecom systems offer features previously available only with large, expensive PBX systems. Among the features are voice enhancement for better reception, automated attendants, voicemail to an email inbox, and mobile access to the business phone system.

Most VOIP systems are easier to set-up and operate and less expensive than landlines. VoIP systems can be purchased and hosted on-site or connected through rented space on a service provider’s platform. Such cloud-based systems do not require any investment other than desk phones.

However, because VoIP relies on an internet connection, businesses in areas where internet connectivity is erratic may want to reconsider.
