Top 4 Principles Related to Personal Identifiable Information You Should Know

What does PII (Personally Identifiable Information) include?

4 Principles Related to Personal Identifiable Information (PII). The new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) lays down four important principles for data protection. One of these is individual consent. This pillar must be given before collecting and processing PII. Personal Identifiable Information is also associated with linkability and de-identification. If you’re unsure which principle applies to your company, you can read more here.

The new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) aims to protect individuals’ privacy. Therefore, data processing practices must respect individual consent and the principles of “privacy by design.” It means that privacy considerations must be incorporated into the design of the process and must be continually monitored and assessed. Moreover, systems obtaining personal data from EU data subjects should default to strict privacy settings.

The new EU General Data Protection Regulation pillars provide the use of personal and non-personal data. It focuses on protecting data structure, establishing new infrastructures for data sharing, and enabling business-to-business sharing. Finally, established the European Data Innovation Board (EDIB), a body intended to foster coordination.

Although many states require personal information disclosure to be disclosed to third parties, California has an exemption for certain disclosures. Under California law, agencies can only disclose personally identifiable information with written consent from a parent. The court’s reasoning is based on state policy. However, there are some limitations on what types of disclosures agencies can make. Therefore, you should review the information carefully before submitting your personally identifiable data to an agency.

Linkability

When it comes to our data privacy, we are concerned about the security and protection of our social security numbers, home addresses, driver’s license numbers, and other identifying information. Such information may be linked to a person’s identity to perform various functions. However, not all such information is equally sensitive. Moreover, some information may be particularly sensitive, such as biometric data and medical records.

Even though it is theoretically possible to identify someone based on other information without their name, this requires additional effort. For example, the IRS recently reported that perpetrators had accessed their website applications and answered personal verification questions. Fortunately, the IRS and other institutions are now making this process easier. For now, the new standards for linking IP addresses to personally identifiable information do not require the use of a name, but they do help.

De-identification of PII

There are four main types of personally identifiable information: social security number, passport number, taxpayer identification number, and bank or credit card number. For example, when you buy bitcoin with your credit card. Other personal information includes name and address, whether they are street addresses or emails. These bits of data, when combined with additional personal information, can trace an individual back to that person.

De-identification is a process that exposes data to research in health or the market while protecting personal information from being traced. It is particularly important in the healthcare and education industries, which use personal information to make their products and services more useful to patients. This method is facilitated by standards and best practices published by the International Standards Organization and Health Level 7.
