Prepare Your Home for Any Emergency

Emergency situations happen. It is a fact of life that none of us can do anything about. Issues like fire and tornados can quickly become life and death matters as well as simple power outages that end up lasting for days. Being prepared ahead of time is your best defense against these situations.

Fire

Educate yourself and family members on how to avoid fires. Teach everyone kitchen safety, the proper way to use electronics and chargers, and how to use a fire extinguisher. Have smoke detectors in all major areas as well as in hallways and each bedroom. Check them routinely to make sure they are functioning correctly. Keep rope ladders in upstairs rooms, and instruct everyone on where to go once they are outside.

Tornados

If you live in an area that is prone to tornados, you know how scary a storm can be. A casual spring thunderstorm can turn in a heartbeat. You don’t want to be running around in a panic when every second counts. Determine ahead of time what area of your home is the safest. This should always be the basement, but if your house doesn’t have one, look for an interior space without windows.

Power Outages

It can be nice to “unplug” for a bit, but outages that continue for days on end are dangerous. You could find yourself without heat on freezing cold nights, without AC in the heat of the summer, or without food when your refrigerator no longer keeps food cold. Avoid this by having a back-up source of power like a generator or alternative methods from Tekris Power Electronics. Click here for more information.

Make sure you are prepared for any situation by having the proper tools of survival on hand. Know how to use them, and educate the family on all emergency plans. This includes taking shelter and evacuation. Hopefully you will never have to put any of this information to use, but if you need it, it sure is nice to have.
