Tips of Buying Used Turf Equipment for Your Project

If you have a major landscaping project and you’re trying to save money any way you can, it would make sense for you to purchase gently-used turf equipment instead of buying new. Most used equipment that you can find from reputable dealers will have been refurbished and repaired, so it will be in good shape. However, there are still some things to consider when shopping around for used turf equipment for your project.

Look For Low Operating Hours

Note that in the above paragraph that we refer to good used equipment as “gently used.” This means that anything you buy has either seen relatively few operating hours or has been so well-maintained that it looks and operates like new. Inspect any equipment you are considering buying for signs of wear and tear, and ask the seller how the equipment was used. Something that was used for relatively minor lawn maintenance will almost always be in better shape than something that was used on entire acres of land.

Make Sure Replacement Parts Are Available

One of the biggest potential pitfalls of buying anything used is that replacement parts might be nearly impossible to come by. You should be okay if you’re only buying last year’s model that is still widely used, but you could be out of luck if you have an older model that hasn’t been in production in years. Whatever you buy should be easy to repair if need be. Your “new” equipment might be in great shape, but you have to be prepared for anything.

Only Buy From Reputable Dealers

For the most part, buying used equipment from a reputable dealer is a safe bet. Most of what you will buy will at least be functional, and it most likely will have been refurbished and repaired to work like new. If there are any known issues, the seller will certainly let you know so you can be aware of exactly what you are buying. However, that’s if you’re buying from a reputable dealer. If you are buying from a private seller, you can never be sure what you are getting unless you are allowed to inspect the equipment yourself.

In any case, always proceed with caution when purchasing any used equipment. While buying used is a great way to save some money, it won’t do you any good if you’ve bought nearly worthless equipment that just needs to be repaired.
